Nutritional Pathophysiology

In this course we were able to study the pathologies of different disease processes and how they related to their perspective nutritional therapies. In this course we were individually responsible for creating patient handouts that pertained to specific medical conditions. These handouts allowed us to practice both our medical knowledge as well as our ability to translate that information for the average patient to understand. I have attached the link to these handouts below in the event you would like to review them.

Patient Handout- Celiac Disease

This handout focused on explaining difficult topics such as how and why the disease process begins. As well as provide information on the recommended medical nutrition therapy for treating each condition. This handout allowed me to practice my critical thinking skills as well as how best to break down information for patients.

Patient Handout- Megaloblastic Anemia

This handout focused on explaining difficult topics such as how and why the disease process begins. As well as provide information on the recommended medical nutrition therapy for treating each condition. This handout allowed me to practice my critical thinking skills as well as how best to break down information for patients.

Advanced Nutrition

The primary focus of this course is to understand the function of the human body as it pertains to the digestion, absorption and excretion of vital nutrients. The scope of this course went beyond the basic understanding and instead delved deeper into understanding the metabolic, genetic and hormonal aspects of nutrition. In this course we were individually responsible for completing a complex research project about one of the major neuromuscular diseases. I choose Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS); providing a scientific approach, a simplified patient approach and a comprehensive list covering the progression of the disease, information on medical nutrition therapy and suggestions for various supporting therapies. I have attached the link to this project below in the event you would like to review them.

Neuromuscular Disease Assignment

This project allowed me to focus on not just one aspect of a condition but on multiple. This allowed me to further understand the pathology as well as how to treat the patient with medical nutrition therapy. This project effectively took me out of the classroom and into the real world of nutritional medicine.
